Cappuccino Thoughts 39: ReCap of the First Annual Walk
+ bag party next week! + a book from Singapore
Shoutout to last week’s outfit of the week, A., who turned out to be a friend of a friend of a friend, and is now a Cap Thoughts subscriber! Sorry for the stalker photo….you looked amazing though! You’ve gotta share the deets on those gold cowboy boots.
Wow, the walk was yesterday, and I am honestly blown away. We had so many wonderful friends of the newsletter come out to walk, even in the rain. The skies eventually cleared up, and we vanquished 15 miles and 5 cups of coffee.
I started writing this newsletter at the beginning of the year, honestly unsure who would even read it It is because of you, my lovely readers, that I keep writing every week, even when my legs are so sore all I want to do is lie on my couch.
My goal for this walk was to celebrate coffee, culture, and community in New York, and we absolutely did all three. I loved bringing this diverse group of people together and seeing new connections sparked, friendships formed, and relationships deepened.
It was also very special to promote local coffee shops in New York along the way. I have to give a major shoutout to our amazing sponsor El Condor. They blew us away with delicious cold brew and delectable pastries. They even prepared special goodie bags for Cap Thoughts walkers replete with a blue cappuccino glass, water bottle, pastry, stickers, custom playlist (!), and a little note to all the walkers. Keep an eye on El Condor for their future pop-ups!
We had such a lovely rotating cast of walkers cycle in and out throughout the day. Special shoutout to B., F., L., J., and V. for doing the whole thing start to finish.
It was pretty surreal to see people wearing Cap Thoughts caps (or “thinking caps” as someone suggested I brand them), sporting Cap Thoughts stickers, and to see this lovely note addressed to our readers.
See you next year? Saturday September 28, 2024. Mark your calendars.
Look of the week
Spotted this woman while I was having tea with my mom and F. (and took the photo through the window of our outdoor dining structure). The tweed dress with the matching headband is too cute, and the silver shoes and hot pink bag pick up some of the details in the fabric. Perfection! Her dining mate was also dressed in shades of magenta. I hope those chic ladies had a lovely tea time.
Updates on the bag project—it’s party time!
You know the drill. Saturday, October 7th at By Liv Handmade boutique (293 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn). 2-7pm. We’ll have a tarot card reader, jewelry maker to craft charms for the bags, more coffee, and a whole lot of fun and fashion.
Come stop by, I’ll be there the whole time.
I am very excited for this event….and very excited for my gig moonlighting as an event planner to be over.
What’s on the bedside table
Impractical Uses of Cake by Yeoh Jo-Ann was one of the books the bookseller I met in Singapore recommended to me. In fact, he called it his favorite fiction book. I’m so glad he put it in my hands, because I don’t think I would have picked it up myself, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book takes place in Singapore and stars Sukhin, a pessimistic teacher who doesn’t enjoy much in life. Not my usual preferred protagonist. But his life is upended when he goes on an errand in Chinatown and finds his ex-girlfriend living homeless on the street. Reconnected over their love of cake, they change each other’s world views. The book served as a subtle critique of the complacency of the expected path—getting a traditional job and climbing the ladder, the Singaporean (or really global) obsession with status and money. It was slightly anarchic with an open ending I still found very satisfying. It reminded me a little bit of the French film Jeux d’Enfants starring Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet, with an ambiguous friendship that has major ramifications on each of the characters’ lives. Four stars.

This week I will be prepping for the bag launch! Gluing labels, photographing bags, figuring out merchandising …all the sexy behind the scenes stuff that makes this happen.
