Day 3: On How to Act on Your Interests
I think what can be daunting about culture and creative pursuits is the very beginning. We so often think we have to buy all the equipment to start painting or invest in a semester-long course to learn something new. De-risk it. Start very small. Start so small that it seems insignificant. Because starting there will help you determine what’s next. If you loved your one-off class, great! Sign up for another one. And another one. Refrain from signing up for the full semester course just yet. Going from 1 to 100 is almost as hard as going from 0 to 100. Keep it simple and fun and focus on going from 1 to 2.
Even though you are excited to try something new, you may also be a little nervous, depending on what you chose. How are you going to follow through?
I am more likely to attend something if I have pre-paid for it. I also find that if I schedule it in my calendar like a meeting, I am more inclined to go.
It also helps to enlist a friend. Think about someone you’ve been meaning to reach out to and invite them to join you for a cultural happening soon. Some ideas:
